phenotype observed in females
phenotype observed in males
N normal phenotype
nervous system
N
• normal Fosb expression in the hypothalamic medial preoptic area
• fewer oxytocin neurons in postpartum heterozygous females

growth/size/body
• pups of heterozygous mothers weigh less than normal likely due to an insufficient oxytocin surge in the heterozygous mother causing, at least, inadequate milk ejection
• after weaning from heterozygous mothers the pups' weight increases but does not entirely catch up with that of pups of +/+ mothers

behavior/neurological
• heterozygous mothers take longer to crouch over their pups for feeding and likely have diminished milk ejection
• heterozygous mothers take longer than wildtype to retrieve pups and re-build nest

endocrine/exocrine glands
N
• histologically normal mammary glands in prepartum and postpartum heterozygotes

cellular
• expresssion of this allele as assessed by beta-galactosidase staining occurs only in offspring of heterozygous males not heterozygous females
• only the paternal allele is expressed in northern blot analysis at embryonic day 12.5
