• rates of HCO3- influx during Cl- removal and HCO3- efflux during Cl- replacement in villi epithelia are decreased by 65% to 80% compared to in wild-type cells
• the sulfate ions/bicarbonate exchange is eliminated in duodenum epithelium
• baseline pH in villous epithelia is increased compared to in wild-type cells
• however, baseline pH is increased to wild-type levels in the absence of carbon dioxide/bicarbonate ions or during methazolamide treatment

• in the proximal tubules baseline pHi is decreased to 7.38+/-0.02 compared to 7.49+/-0.01 in wild-type mice and the rate of apical Cl/HCO3- exchanger activity is decreased by 58%
• oxalate does not increase the rate of fluid absorption unlike in wild-type mice; however the baseline rate of fluid absorption is normal

digestive/alimentary system
• basal, but not forskolin-stimulated, HCO3- secretion is decreased 30.5% in mucosal duodenal tissue and in the presence of an outward pH and HCO3- gradient uptake of Cl- is decreased by about 39% in apical membrane vesicles from the duodenum
