mortality/aging
• Background Sensitivity: when backcrossed for 5 generations to C57BL/6 the expected number of homozygotes are seen at E18.5 but about half die between E18.5 and P21; however no lethality is seen on a mixed 129S6/SvEvTac and C57BL/6 background
digestive/alimentary system
• at 4 weeks of age the number of mucin-producing goblet cells is reduced and this reduction increases progressively so that by 6-8 weeks of age 90-95% of the goblet cells are lost
• the number of enteroendocrine cells is severely reduced; however the number of enterocytes is similar to wild-type
• in some homozygotes stunted villi and occasional reduction in the brush border microvilli are seen
• the number of Paneth cells is severely reduced
• mild inflammation of the small intestine is seen sometimes seen in homozygotes mostly in those older than 4-6 weeks of age
growth/size/body
• Background Sensitivity: on a mixed background homozygotes are 15-20% smaller than littermate controls and when backcrossed for 5 generations to C57BL/6, the reduction in size is increased to about 30%
• Background Sensitivity: when backcrossed for 5 generations to C57BL/6, at E18.5 homozygotes weigh 20-30% less than littermate controls
immune system

endocrine/exocrine glands
