• while intrahippocampal injection of kainic acid (KA) induces recurrent seizure-type EEG activity of similar frequency and duration, unaccompanied by overt manifestation, in transgenic and wild-type mice, the transgenic mice experience a significantly greater intra-seizure spike frequency
• transgenic mice exhibit significantly higher baseline activity levels than do wild-type mice
• 15 of 24 transgenic mice fitted with hippocampal and/or cortical electrodes exhibited occasional seizure-like brain activity, on average once per hour, unaccompanied by convulsion or muscle twitching; this was abolished by administration of 5-iodotubercidin (ITU), an inhibitor of adenosine kinase
