cardiovascular system
• myocytes exhibit a 19% increase in mean cell size, with both the long and short axis lengths increased
• hearts are about 20% larger
• heart weight/body weight ratio is increased by 18% without changes in the size of other organs or overall body weight, however show no signs of heart failure after 1 year
• significant increase in wall thickness in both the anterior and the posterior left ventricular (LV) walls, however observe no differences in LV diastolic or systolic diameter or fractional shortening, indicating normal cardiac function
• mice subjected to pressure overload with aortic banding exhibit protection against pressure overload, with a trend for a reduction in left ventricle end-systolic volume and greater systolic function, blunted cardiac hypertrophy, reduced left ventricle chamber dimension, and decreased fibrosis in the left ventricular wall
• however, mice exhibit a hypertrophic response to swim exercise training similar to controls
