• axons of olfactory neurons expressing the mutant allele display a diffuse distribution on the outer nerve layer of the olfactory bulb with very few entering the glomerular layer
• aberrant pattern apparent as early as E17
• number of axons expressing deletion declines from birth to 10 weeks of age when axon number is about 1% of control numbers
• similar results are seen in homozygous animals
