• in mutants, the bowel wall is thinner than in wild-type mice: thickness of the circular and longitudinal layers of muscle is less in proximal and distal small intestine of mutants due to presence of thinner muscle cells in mutants
• muscle cells of mutants appear to have fewer thin filaments
