• primary spermatocytes represent the most advanced spermatogenic cells
• arrest at the stage of pachytene-like chromosome condensation
• show ovarian tubulostromal hyperplasia
• with hyperplasia of interstitial cells
• approximately 30% of the size of the wild-type
• in both sexes
• do not show gross changes in any of the 32 somatic tissues examined
• homozygous mutants are born at normal Mendelian distribution
