• in the femur bone volume in the primary spongiosa is reduced but the secondary spongiosa is unaffected
• at 8 weeks of age, a decrease in trabecular bone volume is seen mainly at the metaphysis of the tibia; however, cortical bone volume at the diaphysis is similar to wild-type littermates
• in the femur, the width of the calcified layer and number of calcified chondrocytes are reduced; however, the hypertrophic chondrocyte zone appears normal
• at 8 weeks of age, a decrease in trabecular bone volume is seen mainly at the metaphysis of the femur and tibia
• femur and tibia bone volume in the cortical bone at the diaphysis is similar to wild-type littermates
• trabecular bone in the vertebral bodies is similar to wild-type
• during surgically induced osteoarthritis in the knee, cartilage destruction is similar but formation of osteophytes is decreased

• in culture, chondrocyte proliferation is similar to wild-type but calcification is suppressed
• calcification of auricular cartilage on a high inorganic phosphate diet is reduced compared to wild-type
