• at E12 detection of cleaved caspase-3 in the cervical spine shows a 59% decrease in apoptotic cells
• TUNEL assays show a 73% decrease at E12 and a 45% decrease in apoptotic cells at E14
• at E16 and E18, no differences in apoptosis compared to wild-type were detected; no difference is observed at E12 and E16 in the brainstem of mutant and wild-type mice
• by E14, the marginal layer of the cervical spinal cord is consistently smaller and abnormally shaped in mutants
• the width of the marginal layer at this level is significantly reduced compared to wild-type although at E12 and E14 the total area of the spinal cord does not differ from controls
• in the cervical spinal cord at E14, the population of motoneurons lying in between the ventral lateral and dorsal medial neuronal pools is 5-fold greater than in wild-type: this region houses spinal accessory motoneurons (SACMNs)
• The ventral lateral pool shows a significantly higher number of neurons as well
