phenotype observed in females
phenotype observed in males
N normal phenotype
behavior/neurological
• in rotarod tests, mutants do not show increased duration on rotating rod with successive trials, but control mice do; performance by wild-type on final 3 trials is significantly better than mutants which show impaired motor learning

nervous system
• medium spiny neurons have higher primary dendrite numbers (8.2) compared to wild-type (7)
• NMDA-receptor mediated EPSCs are nearly abolished in mutants compared to wild-type
• density of current activated by NMDA is reduced greatly in mutants vs controls
• after high frequency stimulation, dorsomedial striatal slices from mutants do not display LTP
• brain slices that include the nucleus accumbens (NAc) from mutant mice do not show LTD with moderate-frequency stimulation of the NAc

growth/size/body
N
• male mice (8-18 weeks) single-housed for 1 week or longer show no abnormalities in growth rate

behavior/neurological
N
• male mice (8-18 weeks) single-housed for 1 week or longer show no impairment in pain, sensitivity or motor coordination
• no locomotor abnormality is apparent at 9-10 weeks of age
• single-housed mice perform normally in a forced swim test at 12-15 weeks, displaying no depressive-like behavior
• spatial acuity is normal
• in a Y-maze test, mutants show a reduction in alternatation down to chance levels relative to controls which demonstrate reliable alternation
• administration of risperidone for 3 weeks alleviate the observed deficit
• in a 2 bottle saccharine test, mice receiving 8 weeks of social isolation starting at 8 weeks of age show a decreased preference for sweet solutions, but total liquid intake is unchanged compared to controls
• in an elevated plus maze test, group-housed mice display anxiety-like behavior at 16 weeks of age; single-housed animals show social isolation-induced stress and show anxiety-like behavior earlier, at 8 weeks of age
• animals spend significantly less time exploring the center area of an open field
• novelty-induced hyperlocomotion is prominent during the first 3 minutes of spontaneous exploration in open-field test
• mutants older than 12 weeks display definite deficit in nest-building behavior; mice that were group-housed until 16 weeks of age show a milder nest-building deficit
• breeding efficiency is significantly decreased in males older than 12 weeks that had been socially isolated from 7 weeks of age
• when presented with a 4-week old stimulus male, 12-week old mutants do not investigate the stimulus mouse during the initial 1-minute presentation, which may indicate enhanced anxiety
• increased social investigation toward the novel animal is exhibited after the second trial (presentation) and this is maintained in subsequent trials without habituation, in contrast to control mice which show decreased interest in the stimulus animal in subsequent trials

nervous system
• putative pyramidal neurons from 13-14 week old mice show increased mean firing rates and decreased cross-correlation with nearby neurons compared to controls
• 10-12 week old mice that were single-housed show an impaired prepulse inhibition of the auditory startle reflex, although the reflex amplitude is normal; a similar deficit is observed in age-matched group-housed mutants
• defects are partially ameliorated by risperidone

hearing/vestibular/ear
N
• male mice (8-18 weeks) single-housed for 1 week or longer show no impairment in auditory function

homeostasis/metabolism
N
• male mice (8-18 weeks) single-housed for 1 week or longer show no impairment in thermoregulation

vision/eye
N
• male mice (8-18 weeks) single-housed for 1 week or longer show no impairment in visual function
