digestive/alimentary system
• in the small intestine the numbers of granule goblet and intermediate cells are also reduced although not as severely as Paneth cell numbers (J:43025)
• the area normally occupied by Paneth cells is occupied by crypt base columnar cells (J:43025)
• in distal jejunal crypts the numbers of proliferating cells in the bottom 1/3 of the crypt are increased while the numbers in the upper 2/3 are similar to wild-type (J:43025)
• about a 5-fold increase in proliferating cells in the base of the crypt with no significant reduction in the number of proliferating cells in the normal progenitor niche (along the sides of the crypt) (J:115873)
• overall increase in the total number of proliferating cells in small intestinal crypts (J:115873)
• 95% reduction in the number of Paneth cells at P28 and an 82% reduction at P42
• however, the duodenal, jejunal, and ileal crypts are free of detectable microbes similar to wild-type mice and no abnormalities in the morphology of Peyer's patches or signs of inflammation are detected in specific pathogen free mice
• lack of Paneth cells
