• kidneys exhibit macula densa hyperplasia and the nuclei are piled up in a pseudostratified pattern
• plasma creatinine levels are elevated indicating a decreased glomerular filtration rate

cardiovascular system

• hearts show neither cardiac hypertrophy or atrophy nor differences in arterial wall thickness
• on a normal diet, exhibit normal heart rate, however on either a low salt or high salt diet, show a small increase in heart rate
• lower blood pressure occurs over an entire 24 hour period during times of high and low activity
• on a high salt diet, mean arterial blood pressure increases more in homozygotes (by 5.7 mm Hg) than in wild-type (by 1.9 mm Hg), indicating salt sensitivity, however it is still lower than in wild-type
• markedly reduced mean arterial pressure variability in the midfrequency band indicates a contribution of reduced sympathetic vasomotor tone to the hypotension
