• 60-75% of infertile females oocytes have poorly structured metaphase plates compared to 30% in controls (Rad51c^tm1Sks heterozygotes)

• however, chromosomes align normally along the metaphase I plate and there are no apparent defects in pairing and cohesion of chromosomes

• oocytes of hormone-treated infertile females have a variety of chromosome abnormalities at metaphase II including precocious separation of chromatids

• in oocytes with precocious separation of chromatids some chromatids are accentric and a few have two centromeres

• 20% of oocytes from superovulated infertile females have greater than 20 chromosomes and some have 20 or fewer pairs of centromeres
