renal/urinary system
N |
• basement membrane is intact during kidney development
|
• some kidneys show cystic or dysplastic elements
|
• in 2/4 mutants examined at E13.5, no kidney development was seen and metanephric mesenchyme was atrophying; in 1 of 4 embryos, a kidney was developing on one side while in 1 of 4, kidney development on both sides occurred

small kidney
(

)
• kidneys are smaller than those of wild-type littermates
|
• some animals lack one (23%) or both (46%) kidneys; remainder (31%) have two kidneys
|
• at E11.5, embryos show no evidence of ureteric bud branching or invasion of the metanephric mesenchyme
• by E12.5, extent of branching is variable with either one or two rounds of branching, compared to three rounds in wild-type
• ureteric bud formation is normal, but there is failure to invade metanephric mesenchyme
