• ossification in nearly every region of the endochondral skeleton is blocked, while formation of cartilage-independent membranous bones is unaffected; as a result, all endochondral bones are hypoplastic
• in the most strongly affected mutants, the endochondral bones at the base of the skull, hyoid bone, the bones of the limbs, the sternum, and the pelvis remain entirely cartilaginous
• chondrocyte hypertrophy is completely absent
