• although the number and morphology of glomus cells is normal, no significant changes in respiratory rate or minute ventilation occur in response to hypoxia of 10% oxygen, the partial pressure of CO2 in arterial blood is incresed an pH decreased, but ventilary and locomotor responses to hypercapnia of 5% CO2 remain normal
• although the carotid sinus nerves respond to low pH they do not respond to hypoxia, lactate, acetate, or proprionate
