cardiovascular system
• at 2 weeks of age and more prominently in older mice, single to multiple yellowish-white lesions are visible on the exterior of the heart and in cross-sections
• the interventricular septum and the free wall of the right ventricle are more affected than the free wall of the left ventricle by lesions
• mice display dilation of the sarcotubular system
• Purkinje fibers have less dense cytoplasm containing some dense granules, less myofibrils and more pleomorphic mitochondria than in wild-type myocytes and lack the T tubules
• intermediate filaments within Purkinje fibers are absent
• in mitotic myocytes, myofibrils are disorganized and the mitochondria more condensed and pleomorphic than in non-dividing myocytes
• myofibrils at the intercalated discs are often stretched and fragmented and have denser cell to cell contacts than in wild-type mice
• decreased myocytes is accompanied by an increase in interstitial cells and fibrosis
• myocardial fiber degeneration is evident at day 5 but more prominent at 11 to 14 days and 3 to 4 weeks
• degenerating cells are observed scattered between normal cardiomyocytes, in the left ventricle and papillary muscles
• early degenerating myocytes lack plasmalemma
• at 9 weeks of age, lesions are present in the papillary muscles
• degenerating cells are observed scattered between normal cardiomyocytes, in the left ventricle and papillary muscles
• the interventricular septum and the free wall of the right ventricle are more affected than the free wall of the left ventricle by lesions
• the interventricular septum and the free wall of the right ventricle are more affected than the free wall of the left ventricle by lesions
• the free right ventricular wall is thinned
• in some mice, lesions occur in a thickened epicardium
• fibrosis increases with age
• calcium deposits occur in some parts of lesions
• the number of calcified plaques increases with age
