mortality/aging
• Background Sensitivity: survival of mice backcrossed 3 times to C57BL/6 is impaired compared to mice of earlier backcross generations

nervous system
N |
• gross brain morphology and the size, cellular density and lamination of the retina, dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus and visual cortex are similar to wild-type controls
|
• ipsilateral projections of the retinal ganglion cells target an elongated, comet-shaped area of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN)
• the difference in target area is more marked in rostral sections where the patch is narrower and elongated along the dorsomedial to ventrolateral axis
• in caudal sections the target area is expanded so that it abuts the dorsomedial border of the dLGN
• some retinal ganglion cell ipsilateral axons appear to have multiple terminal foci
• however, segregation of ipsilateral and contralateral projections is maintained and no defect in crossing of axons in the optic chiasm is detected
|
behavior/neurological
• mice show impaired performance in a visually mediated behavioral tasks (vertical placement, horizontal placement, and a modified version of the visual cliff test)
• however, somatosensory cue-mediated performance in the vertical placement assay is similar to wild-type controls
• following treatment with tetrodotoxin to induce monocular vision behavior of homozygous mice in the visual cliff test resembles that of wild-type mice exposed to tetrodotoxin
