liver/biliary system
• almost 5-fold more hepatocytes are in the S phase in 14 week old mice compared to wild-type controls as measured by BrdU incorporation
• there is a 2- to 3-fold increase in the number of Ki67-positive hepatocytes starting at 3 weeks of age and persisting into adulthood
• the percentage of proliferating hepatocytes drops more than 2-fold upon administration of an antagonist to retinoic acid receptors
• 80% of male mice and 69% of female mice have hepatic tumors between the ages of 9 and 29 months
• malignant tumors first become evident in the liver in 20% of mice at one year of age
• malignant tumors are found in 41% of mice between 13-19 months of age and in 80% of mice in 19-29 months of age
• tumors generally consist of two types: trabecular with well-differentiated cells and solid, with poorly differentiated cells
• metastasis to lung is observed in 13% of mice
• 53% of nine month old mice exhibit adenomas compressing the nontumoral parenchyma

cellular
• 15 % of hepatocyte nuclei from 14 week old mice have 8N DNA content and 4% have 16N DNA compared to less the 5% of wild-type hepactocytes having a nuclei DNA content greater than 4N
