• hyoid in some mutants is fused only unilaterally to basisphenoid bone
• bone typically shows extended ossification center and connects to stapes through a transformed lesser horn
• at E10.5, apoptosis extending from proximal to distal mandibular region, but is confined to proximal region in wild-type
• lower jaw is mirror image of upper jaw with arrays of vibrissae at E18.5
• skeletal analysis shows duplication of upper jaw elements in lower jaw region

• at E9.5, 40% of embryos have gourd-shaped hearts with disproportionate chamber sizes
• at E9.5 the number of proliferating cells is decreased in the compact and trabecular layers of the ventricular wall
• often have poorly developed ventricular walls at E9.5
