• while the number of immature reticulocytes is increased the number of mature reticulocyes is decreased compared to in wild-type mice
• a significant proportion of mature reticulocytes retain mitochondria unlike wild-type cells
• however, autophagosomes responsible for removal of mitochondria are present and removal of ribosomes and the nucleus is normal
• the number of reticulocytes is increased compared to in wild-type mice
• red blood cells exhibit faster clearance of with N-hydroxysuccinimido-biotin, shorter lifespan and greater induction of apoptosis signaling than wild-type cells
• red blood cells are osmotically fragile compared to wild-type cells
