hematopoietic system
• all B cells express human mu heavy chain immunoglobulin with most of the B cells also expressing human delta heavy chain
• late pro-B cell numbers are increased more than 2-fold compared to wild-type mice suggesting a less efficient V to DJ joining process
• the presence of the two transgenes rescues the block in B cell development that occurs in Igh-Jtm1Jkbv development
• mature B cells are found in the bone marrow, spleen and blood in numbers corresponding to 58%, 55%, and 30% of wild-type levels
• antibodies containing human mu heavy chain are found in the serum at a concentration of 350 micrograms per ml, a level over 500 fold higher than found in transgenic mice without the Igh-J targeted mutation
• the serum concentration of antibodies with human mu heavy chain is only 2- to 3- fold lower than the concentration of IgM found in humans
