• mice homozygous for this mutation are not susceptible to infection by mouse cytomegalovirus (MCMV)
• NK cells of homozygous mutant mice arrest at the CD27+CD11b- stage
• expression of KLRG-1 and CD43, two markers of the late stage in NK cell maturation, is reduced by half in homozygous mutant NK cells
• despite apparent defects in NK cell maturation, NK cell numbers are normal
• degranulation by mutant NK cells is normal
• homozygous mutant NK cells fail to produce interferon (IFN) gamma upon stimulation of Ly49D, an NK cell activating receptor
• however, IFN gamma production is normal in response to stimulation with YAC-1 or CHO-A7 cells, PMA/ionomycin, IL-12/IL-18, and antibodies to NK1.1
