• reduction in the number of conventional effector T cells in islets is due to decreased CD8+ T cell proliferation
• decrease in CD8+ T cell proliferation
• CD4+Foxp3- T cells in islets show a reduction in IL-2 production
• CD4+FoxP3- and CD8+ T cells in islets show reduced TNF-alpha production
• females exhibit a delayed onset of autoimmune diabetes and decreased diabetes incidence (48% vs 84% in controls) by 30 weeks of age
• males are completely protected from developing autoimmune diabetes
• both males and females show a reduction in degree of insulitis at 10 weeks of age
