hematopoietic system
• idiotype positive Ly-1 B cells escape clonal deletion
• about 5% of mice develop anemia with an enormous accumulation of agglutinated erythrocytes
• tolerant mice become anemic following injection of LPS
• inversely correlated with autoantibody levels
• mice fall within 3 categories; those with anemia (hematocrit less than 30%, 5% of mice), those that are intermediate (hematocrit between 30% and 40%, 44% of mice) and those that are tolerant (hematocrit above 40%, 51% of mice)
• general decrease in idiotype positive B cells and large decrease in the ratio of B cells to pre B cells in the spleen and lymph node
• the degree of deletion of idiotype positive B cells varies among individuals
• remaining B cells are anergized
• no difference in B cell number or the ratio of B cells to pre B cells is seen in the bone marrow
• red blood cell half life is decreased in mice in the intermediate group

immune system
• idiotype positive Ly-1 B cells escape clonal deletion

• the degree of deletion of idiotype positive B cells varies among individuals
• remaining B cells are anergized
• no difference in B cell number or the ratio of B cells to pre B cells is seen in the bone marrow
• considerable amounts of autoantibody are found associated with erythrocytes
• the amount of autoantibody present varies over a 2-log range
