hematopoietic system
• a double-positive thymocyte population exists that has surface markers of mature single positive thymocytes (HSAlo-neg TCRbetahi) and may represent single-positive CD4+ thymoyctes that are redirected to a CD8+ T cell lineage
• there is about a 2-fold reduction in the number of single-positive CD4+ cells among mature thymocytes compared to controls
• there is also a decrease in the number of CD4+ T cells in the periphery
• there is a greater than 20% increase in the number of single-positive CD8+ cells among mature thymocytes compared to controls
• there is also an increase in the number of CD8+ T cells in the periphery

• 47% of CD4+ T cells produced IFN-gamma after 3 days of stimulation with anti-CD3 and anti-CD28 compared to just 5.6% of wild-type CD4+ T cells
