• basal Cl- /HCO3- exchange is markedly increased in pancreatic duct epithelial cells
• treatment with an inhibitor of CFTR inhibits basal Cl- /HCO3- exchange unlike in wild-type mice
• in pancreatic duct epithelial cells basal HCO3- permeability is increased
• enhanced spontaneous fluid secretion by pancreatic duct epithelial cells when incubated in HCO3- buffered media
• reduced secretin or forskolin stimulated fluid secretion by pancreatic duct epithelial cells
• however, siRNA knockdown Ctfr does inhibit secretion as in wild-type cells
