nervous system
• dorsal root ganglia cultured with NFG exhibit increased neurite ramifications and varicosities compared with wild-type cells
• neurites grown on collagen exhibit increased in the number of branch points and in total secondary neurites per neuron compared with wild-type cells
• PGP9.5(Uchl1)+ and CGRP(Calca)+ fine nerve fibers in the epidermis are more numerous and more ramified than in wild-type mice
• however, the number of sensory neurons is normal

immune system
• mice exhibit an increase in degranulation of skin mast cells compared with wild-type mice
• mast cells co-cultured with neurons exhibit a 70% increase in degranulation under basal conditions compared with similarly treated wild-type cells and could not be increased by addition of capsaicin or NGF
• however, basal degranulation is normal and mast cells indirectly co-cultured with neurons exhibit normal degranulation
• however, basal degranulation is normal and mast cells indirectly co-cultured with neurons exhibit normal degranulation

behavior/neurological
• mice fail to exhibit thermal hyperalgesia following the induction of inflammation unlike similarly treated wild-type mice
• mice fail to exhibit thermal hyperalgesia following administration of TNF-alpha, IL1b, or NGF unlike similarly treated wild-type mice
• however, mice exhibit normal thermal hyperalgesia following administration of IL6 and PGE2
• mice exhibit reduced time to withdrawal and decreased temperature at which 50% of mice exhibit withdrawal from a heat source compared with wild-type mice
• however, mechanical nociception is normal

cellular
• dorsal root ganglia cultured with NFG exhibit increased neurite ramifications and varicosities compared with wild-type cells
