digestive/alimentary system
• fewer goblet cells are detected by PAS reactivity in the small intestine and colon compared to in wild-type mice
• some goblet cells exhibit abnormal morphology compared with wild-type cells
• immature goblet cells accumulate in crypts unlike in wild-type mice
• actively secreting goblet cells are infrequently observed unlike in wild-type mice
• crypts exhibit reduced Paneth cell compartment and granuole content compared to in wild-type mice
• however, the number of enteroendocrine cells is normal
• Paneth cells contain fewer granular vacuoles compared with wild-type cells
• the number of Paneth cells per crypt is reduced 1.9- and 1.8-fold in the proximal and distal intestine, respectively, compared to in wild-type mice
• occasionally crypts lack Paneth cells unlike in wild-type mice
