mortality/aging
• 10% of the mice having the diffuse epidermal scale die by 1 week of age

growth/size/body
• loss of the filiform papillae in the runted mice
• hyperkeratosis of the dorsal tongue in the runted mice
• 10% of the mice having the diffuse epidermal scale are runted

behavior/neurological
• decreased feeding activity in 10% of the mice having the diffuse epidermal scale

digestive/alimentary system
• loss of the filiform papillae in the runted mice
• hyperkeratosis of the dorsal tongue in the runted mice

craniofacial
• loss of the filiform papillae in the runted mice
• hyperkeratosis of the dorsal tongue in the runted mice

integument
• keratinocytes are larger and exhibit nuclear atypia
• hyperproliferation as shown by Ki-67 staining and BrdUrd labeling of keratinocytes
• over a period of few weeks, diffuse scaling coalesces into prominent hyperkeratotic plaques lacking hair
• plaques usually resolve by 8 weeks
• no spontaneous epidermal tumors are seen in unstimulated mice (n=25) carried to 6 months
• diffuse epidermal scale at 2-3 days post-natal, prominent by 7 days
• mixed inflammatory infiltrate containing lymphocytes and neutrophils present in the superficial dermis
