vision/eye
• oxidized phosphatidylcholine (PC) generated from docosahexaenoic acid-containing phosphatidylcholine (PC-DHA) is decreased in retinas
• structure of the inner segment is disorganized
• docosahexaenoic acid-containing phospholipids (PL-DHA) are almost absent while phospholipid-containing arachidonic acid (PL-AA) levels are increased in the outer segment of the retina
• incomplete elenogation of the outer segement is seen in 3-8 week old mice
• retinas show disruption of the disc structure in 3 week old mice, showing highly disorganized but membranous disc-like structures at the basal side of the outer segment
• abnormal discs are parallel rather than perpendicular to the axoneme
• however, no changes in the inner segment and the connection cilium as the inner segment-outer segment junction are seen
• the outer segment length is shorted in 3 week old mice
• structure of the outer segment is disorganized
• outer nuclear layer is thinner in 6- and 8-week old mice
• however, the inner nuclear layer thickness is similar to wild-type mice
• retinal degeneration is not caused by phototoxicity as indicated by decreased outer segment/inner segment and outer nuclear layers in both mice housed under dark conditions for 2 weeks and under normal light/dark cycle conditions
• dark-adapted ERG shows 80% decrease in a-wave amplitude and light-adapted ERG shows 80% decrease in a-wave amplitude in 8 week old mice
• dark-adapted ERG shows 50% decrease in b-wave amplitude and light-adapted ERG shows 70% decrease in b-wave amplitude in 8 week old mice
• mice exhibit loss of visual function
