digestive/alimentary system
• cultured colon epithelium cells grown for 2 days under serum starvation exhibit a 3-fold decrease in the number of ciliated colon epithelium cells compared to controls
• however, MEFs grow primary cilia similarly to control MEFs decrease in the number of cilia per crypt in the colon
• colon epithelium shows a reduced number of primary cilia
• decrease in the number of cilia per crypt in the colon
• mice exhibit a higher proliferation rate in the colon that is coupled to a faster turnover of epithelial cells in the crypts
• histologically, however, colon tissue shows no obvious changes
• colon epithelium cells divide more rapidly, with 45% of colon epithelium cells containing >2n DNA compared to 20% of wild-type cells, indicating an increase in the number of cells that are in S or in G2 phase/metaphase of the cell cycle and a higher mitotic activity

homeostasis/metabolism
• in a model of colitis-associated carcinogenesis (intraperitoneal injection of azoxymethane and subsequent periodic administration of dextrane sodium sulfate), mutants show an increase in tumor incidence, increased total number of lesions, and increased tumor size

neoplasm
• in a model of colitis-associated carcinogenesis (intraperitoneal injection of azoxymethane and subsequent periodic administration of dextrane sodium sulfate), mutants show an increase in tumor incidence, increased total number of lesions, and increased tumor size

endocrine/exocrine glands
• decrease in the number of cilia per crypt in the colon
