• whether fed standard chow or a selenium supplemented diet, mice exhibit reduced selenium levels in the kidney compared with similarly treated wild-type mice
• however, selenium levels in the whole body, brain, muscle, and testis are normal when mice are fed a selenium supplemented diet
• glutathione peroxidase activity is 9% of that in wild-type mice and further decreased when mice are fed a selenium-deficient diet
• however, glutathione peroxidase activity in the kidney and liver is normal
