• dorsal red stripes in the skin that run along the spine and from left to right across the crown of the head, across the base of the neck in front of the shoulders, and between the base of the ribs and the pelvis, and these stripes fade with age and are no longer evident by 3 weeks of age

• although a few homozygotes die just before or just after wean age, most homozygotes live a normal life span and are fertile
