immune system
• mice bearing this transgene are resistant to persistent infection of the central nervous system by Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV); 45 days after intracranial inoculation, when longitudinal sections of the spinal cords of their non-transgenic littermates exhibit definite, usually intense focal inflammation of white matter, perivascular cuffs, parenchymal infiltration of mononuclear cells, meningitis and numerous infected cells (identified by polyclonal antiserum vs. TMEV capsid antigens), spinal cords of transgenic animals exhibit few or no cells containing viral antigens and no or minimal inflammation
