mortality/aging
• mice die within 5 and 12 hours of birth due to defective skin barrier function

integument
• at E18.5, skin remains permeable unlike in wild-type mice
• 4-fold increase in transepidermal water loss in neonates
• however, barrier function of tight junctions is normal
• more tightly packed than in wild-type mice
• indicated by an increased occurrence of transition cells underlying the stratum corneum and occasionally irregular tubulus-like structures in the horny layers

homeostasis/metabolism
• 4-fold increase in transepidermal water loss in neonates
• at E18.5, skin remains permeable unlike in wild-type mice
• 4-fold increase in transepidermal water loss in neonates
• however, barrier function of tight junctions is normal
• mice exhibit strongly reduced levels of ester-bound ceramides in the epidermis compared with wild-type mice

growth/size/body
• after birth, mice loss 2.5% body weight per hour unlike wild-type mice
