N normal phenotype
reproductive system
N
• testis weights and histology are normal
• spermatozoa are morphologically normal
• mating behavior, ejaculation, and vaginal plug formation are all normal
• defect in the ability of sperm to migrate into the oviduct
• capacitated sperm deposited directly into the oviduct fertilize eggs normally
• percentage of hyperactivated spermatozoa is higher than in wild-type cells
• however, sperm motility is normal
• ratio of acrosome-reacted and acrosome intact spermatozoa is normal for the first 90 min of incubation but increased after 180 min of incubation
• despite frequent collisions, zona binding ability of spermatozoa to cumulus free eggs is nearly lost
• fertilizing ability is normal when cumulus-intact eggs are used
