reproductive system
• cryptic structures and epithelial invaginations in the ovary begin to be seen from 3-5 months of age
• crypts tend to be located near the hilus and the invaginations near the outside edge of the ovary and invaginate inwards
• females do not develop multioocytic follicles when fed the phytoestrogen-free diet used in this study, however, when switched to phytoestrogen-containing food, they develop multioocytic follicles
• stromal disorganization (stroma occupied with holes instead of densely packed with follicles) is apparent in the medullary regions in most ovaries by 3 months of age
• serous, benign, cystic structures/lesions in the ovaries are commonly found at 8-12 months of age, although are seen as early as 3 months
• most ovaries contain multiple small lesions/inclusion cysts indicative of ovarian endosalpingiosis
• some ovaries have one large cyst that is either fluid filled or contains a mass of cells
• cells lining cysts are epithelial in origin and are similar to a tubal-type epithelium
• cysts often exhibit irregular contours and occasional intraluminal stromal papillae
• 2 of 6 females show a delay in first pregnancy by 2 months of setting up the mating pairs, while the other 4 complete cessation of breeding after only two gestations
• females are subfertile, exhibiting decreased breeding frequency, with an average breeding frequency of 1.0 litter per month compared to 1.2 litters for controls
• decreased litter size, with an average pup number at birth of 11 compared to 16.9 in controls
