cardiovascular system
N
• at early stages, mice exhibit normal endocardial cushion mesenchymal cells
• left-right inversion of heart looping in 7 of 21 mice
• complete or nearly complete absence of the mitral valve
• complete or nearly complete absence of the tricuspid valve

nervous system
• cultured trigeminal ganglia explants are less sensitive to the inhibitory effects of BMP4 on axon outgrowth compared with wild-type explants
• defasciculation of the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal ganglion axons within the face
• at E11.5, the vagus and glossopharyngeal nerves are slightly defasciculated with wayward branching away from the main fiber bundle compared with wild-type mice
• in 16 of 45 mice
• defasciculation of the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal ganglion axons within the face
• however, the mandibular branch is normal
• slight undergrowth of the maxillary branch
• defasciculation of the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal ganglion axons within the face
• shorter than normal at E11.5
• at E13.5, the radial and ulnar nerves do not fully extend into the limbs with less branching compared to in wild-type mice

limbs/digits/tail
• duplication of bones in the hand
• pre-axial in both the forelimbs and hindlimbs with 6 to 7 digits per limb
• immature limbs at E13.5

skeleton
• wider and shorter than in wild-type mice
• in the rib cage

embryo
• left-right inversion of embryonic turning in 5 of 15 mice

homeostasis/metabolism
• severe peripheral edema

cellular
• cultured trigeminal ganglia explants are less sensitive to the inhibitory effects of BMP4 on axon outgrowth compared with wild-type explants
• defasciculation of the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal ganglion axons within the face
• at E11.5, the vagus and glossopharyngeal nerves are slightly defasciculated with wayward branching away from the main fiber bundle compared with wild-type mice
