reproductive system
N
• female fertility is normal
• H&E staining revealed severe germ cell loss in adult testes
• germ cell degeneration of spermatocytes begins at around 2 weeks of age and peaks at 3 to 4 weeks
• TUNEL analysis of testis sections revealed increased germ cell apoptosis at 3 weeks of age, correlating with the onset of germ cell degeneration
• seminiferous tubules exhibit a range of germ cell degeneration phenotypes, ranging from degenerating spermatocytes or round spermatids to Sertoli-cell-only tubules
• adult testis size is significantly smaller than that of heterozygous controls
• adult testis weight is significantly lower than that of heterozygous controls
• germ cell development is disrupted
• very few elongated spermatids are generated
• degeneration of spermatocytes begins at around 2 weeks of age and peaks at 3 to 4 weeks
• cauda epididymides lack normal spermatozoa and contain cellular debris
• males are sterile
