• hypomyelination of the plantar nerve in 19 month old mice, with no axonal loss
• remyelination of nerve fibers after sciatic nerve crush is less effective than in wild-type mice resulting in hypomyelination of large caliber axons
• however, hypomyelination is not seen in the ventral funiculus of the spinal cord
• after stimulation at the sciatic notch (proximal stimulation), compound muscle action potential amplitudes are reduced in 19 month old mutants
• 19, but not 14, month old mice exhibit a 25% reduction in nerve conduction velocities
• more mitochondria in dorsal root ganglion explant cultures from E13.5 embryos pause during anterograde transport events while pausing lasts longer for mitochondria transported in retrograde direction

cellular
• the mitochondrial to genomic DNA-ratio is increased in the sciatic nerve, indicating increased mitochondrial DNA content
• axonal area covered by mitochondria in axons of plantar nerves is increased due to increased size of mitochondria but not increased numbers
• mild oxidative stress in peripheral nerves
