• reduced proliferating ductal epithelial cells at puberty and during lactation
• delayed epithelial tree expansion at puberty
• modestly reduced ductal branching in adult females at estrous stage (10 weeks old)
• severe deficiencies in tertiary branching during early pregnancy
• however, cap and body cells of terminal end buds are normal
• impaired alveolar development during late pregnancy and lactation
• sparsely distributed alveolar units with disrupted epithelial structure during lactation

• sparsely distributed alveolar units with disrupted epithelial structure during lactation
• mice treated with estradiol, progesterone and prolactin fail to induce alveolus development unlike wild-type mice

cellular
• reduced proliferating ductal epithelial cells at puberty and during lactation
• pups of homozygous dams die within 72 hours of birth
• however, fostered pups exhibit normal survival

homeostasis/metabolism
N
• during puberty and pregnancy, mice exhibit normal serum levels of 17beta-estradiol, progesterone and prolactin
