N
• homozygotes exhibit a normal testis weight-to-body weight ratio and no significant change in the number of spermatozoa isolated from the vas deferens relative to wild-type males
• % of sperm heads defects is not significantly higher than that in wild-type controls
• sperm tails are rarely normal, exhibiting either a defective annulus or a bent tail
• ~50% of sperm exhibit a disorganized sperm annulus with disruption of the SEPT ring structure
• immunofluorescence staining of SEPT12, SEPT7, SEPT6 and SEPT2 revealed absence of all 4 septins at the annulus
• 50-60% of sperm exhibit a bent tail
• homozygotes show a more severe reduction in sperm motility than heterozygous males
