cardiovascular system
• mice exhibit enhanced cardiac hypertrophy 4 weeks after aortic banding, showing increased heart weight/body weight, lung weight/body weight, and heart weight/tibial length ratios, increased cross-sectional area of cardiomyocytes, increased left ventricular chamber dimension with impaired systolic function, and more severe cardiac interstitial and perivascular fibrosis
• mice exhibit increased ROS generation, elevated apoptosis level, and decreased activities of respiratory chain complex I, II, and IV after aortic banding
• mice pretreated with NAC, an antioxidant, show reduced cardiac hypertrophy
• however, mice show few pathological, structural and functional alternations in the heart under normal conditions
