N normal phenotype
adipose tissue
• mice fed a standard chow diet exhibit decreased fat mass
• however, no differences are seen in body weight, growth rate, or food intake

cellular
• mice fed a standard chow diet exhibit decreased inguinal fat weight

endocrine/exocrine glands
• mice fed a standard chow diet exhibit decreased inguinal fat weight
• mice exhibit an alpha cell hyperplasia, with elevated alpha cell area and alpha cell proliferation
• however, no pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors are seen

growth/size/body
• mice fed a standard chow diet exhibit decreased fat mass
• however, no differences are seen in body weight, growth rate, or food intake
• liver weight is elevated in mice fed the standard chow diet

homeostasis/metabolism
• fasting blood glucose levels are lower in mice fed a standard chow diet
• however, fasting insulin levels in both standard chow diet and high fat diet fed mice are normal
• fasting glucagon levels are increased
• in an oral glucose tolerance test, mice show a mild decrease in glucose excursion indicating improved glucose tolerance
• however, during insulin tolerance testing, blood glucose levels are similar to wild-type mice indicating that mice are not insulin resistant

liver/biliary system
• liver weight is elevated in mice fed the standard chow diet
• mice fed a standard chow diet following a glucagon challenge show reduced hepatic glucagon sensitivity
• liver cell membranes exhibit decreased glucagon binding
• however, plasma aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, plasma total cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein and low density lipoprotein levels in mice fed both the standard chow diet and high fat diet are similar to wild-type mice
