reproductive system
• loss of proliferative spermatogonia
• increase in apoptotic cells in the testes and in the seminiferous tubules at 6 weeks of age
• mice exhibit apoptosis of proliferative spermatogenic cells, especially the differentiating spermatogonia
• the seminiferous epithelium is up to 50% thinner in mice older than 2 weeks of age
• seminiferous tubule is smaller from 1- to 6-week-old mice
• testes are smaller in mice older than 2 weeks of age
• testes weigh nearly 2 times less than in controls at adult stage
• mice show mildly delayed spermatogenesis in juvenile males: 50% of seminiferous tubules only contain a few primary spermatocytes at 2 weeks of age, only a few round spermatids develop at 3 weeks, although sporadic meiotic cells are seen in some seminiferous tubules, and the development of round spermatids is still delayed in tubules at 4 weeks with no elongated spermatids, and elongated spermatids just start to appear at week 6 and spermatozoa are found in only a few tubules
• mice show delay of appearance of spermatozoa in the epididymis at 7 weeks of age and the delay until spermatozoa emerge in appreciable numbers continues until adulthood; mature spermatozoa are rarely seen in the epididymides at 7 weeks of age
• sperm counts are lower in at 7 and 10 weeks of age and 2 of 5 7-week-old mice do not have any sperm in the cauda epididymis
• some seminiferous tubules undergo degeneration and show a massive loss of spermatocytes with only a single layer of germinal epithelium along the basal membrane from 2 to 4 weeks of age
• however, the degeneration of tubules disappears gradually from 5 weeks and most degenerated tubules are recovered at 6 weeks
• males are fertile, but litter size is smaller, indicating reduced fertility
