hydrocephaly
(
J:312425
)
• 44% of mice develop hydrocephalus
|
• mice exhibit defective differentiation of ependyma, showing poorly differentiated epithelial layer comprising atrophic ependymal cells that exhibit epithelial aspects (flattened cell morphology and reduced cytoplasm) and aberrant ciliation
• thinning of the ependyma is also seen in the 3rd and 4th ventricles which do not present with enlargement and ependymal phenotype is seen in both hydrocephalic and non-hydrocephalic mice
• the ependyma epithelial layer only few basal cells
|
• the percentage of ciliated ependymal cells per ventricular section is reduced by 30%
• the percentage of un-ciliated segments of ependyma is increased 3.4 times
• clusters of cilia that are seen in control ependyma are reduced or eliminated
|
• cilia length is reduced, with median cilia length reduced by 14%
|
• extension of the lateral ventricles is seen in mice with hydrocephalus
• however, no ventriculomegaly is seen in the 4th ventricle and the 3rd ventricle appears unaffected
• lateral ventricle enlargement is first detected at P1 and maximal extension is reached at P24
|
• mice exhibit defective differentiation of choroid plexus with reduced ciliation
• choroid plexus epithelial cells have fewer and shorter cilia
