• adult ovaries lack oocytes
• testes have severe defects in spermatogenesis, with seminiferous tubules containing Sertoli cells and only a few apparent spermatogonia, but lacking spermatocytes, spermatids, or testicular sperm
• most tubules in adults lack germ cells, although isolated populations of ZBTB16+/TRA8+ undifferentiated spermatogonia are seen and marker analysis suggests impaired spermatogonial differentiation and absence of meiotic spermatocytes in testes
• testes only contain apparent spermatogonia at P6, P8, P10, P15, P21 and there is no difference in numbers of spermatogonia as early as P6 indicating impaired spermatogonial differentiation in developing testes
• testes contain fewer KIT+ spermatogonia, with numbers remaining stagnant as mice age, indicating that spermatogonia initiate the differentiation program but it is not sustained and leads to absence of meiotic cells
• neither males or females are able to produce pups when mated with wild-type mice
