reproductive system
• sperm number is drastically reduced
• morphology of epididymal cauda spermatozoa is abnormal, with some spermatozoa having abnormal head morphology, missing midpieces, and short and incomplete flagella
• most sperm exhibit incompletely formed flagella
• the main ultrastructural components of sperm flagellum, such as mitochondria, outer dense fibers, and 9+2 axonemal structures, are misassembled, indicating impaired sperm flagellum assembly
• some spermatozoa have missing midpieces
• most sperm exhibit an abnormal head shape
• mice show a partial globozoospermia phenotype, with morphological alternations of the acrosome vesicle and membrane during the development of elongated spermatids
• decrease in spermatid count is seen in steps 10-16 of spermiogenesis
• elongation of spermatid head
• percent progressive motility of sperm is decreased and most spermatozoa are immotile
• the parameters of sperm movement in forward direction are decreased, including curvilinear velocity, straight-line velocity, and angular path velocity
• in the final developmental phase of spermiogenesis, when the round spermatid undergoes structural modulation to become an elongated spermatid, sperm show an abnormal shape of the elongated spermatid head that is first identified in step 9 and in steps 10-16 of spermiogenesis, this abnormal head shape is accentuated
• spermatid phagocytosis is seen in the seminiferous epithelium
• however, no gross anomalies in mitosis or meiosis are seen
